CISD Receives Texas Smart Schools 2018 Recognition

Posted Date: 06/06/2018

Comstock ISD has been recognized for the 3rd in a row by the Texas Smart Schools Initiative (www.TxSmartSchools.org). Comstock ISD received 4.5 stars out of a possible 5 stars. There were only 134 public schools and charter schools in the state that received either 4.5 or 5.0 stars. Additionally, the Texas Smart Schools report states that Comstock ISD students performed at a Very High Academic Progress level, scoring at or above 96% of all school districts! Check out the report on Comstock (and every district in the state) by going to http://txsmartschools.org/Apples2Apples/ and entering “Comstock ISD” in the search box.

The Texas Smart Schools Initiative uses more than test scores to rate schools. The “Apples2Apples” comparison tool is a data resource that focuses on particularly useful indicators of student performance and then cross-indexes them with spending levels. Instead of focusing solely on traditional test scores, the system considers a multitude of factors to create a fairer, more nuanced measure of academic progress. They use demographics, past performance history, and overall progress when determining their ratings. They use this information to identify schools and districts that are getting the maximum student performance in return for each taxpayer dollar by accurately matching authentic fiscal peers (those with similar characteristics such as language proficiency, utilization of free/reduced price meals, district size, etc.) then comparing their core expenditures. Overlaid with academic achievement, this metric provides a comparative picture of unprecedented clarity.
