Two Comstock teams of very creative youth participate in Regional Destination ImagiNation Tournament

March 10, 2010

Two teams made up of twelve Comstock ISD students competed against over 70 student teams from across the Central Texas area at the Destination ImagiNation® (DI) Regional Tournament in San Antonio on March 6, 2010.   The Comstock Middle School Team brought home 3rd place awards for their teamwork and solution to their Destination ImagiNation Challenge, “DIrect DIposit.”   The Elementary Team performed well and received many positive comments to their solution for the Challenge, “You’re Gonna Flip.”

Participants are Middle School students, William Burgi, Timothy Duran, Carson Farrell, Dayna Greene, Sarah McCourt, and Brandon Paglione.  Elementary participants are Jasmine Duran, Elijah Greene, Tyler Kennedy, Diego Stoddard, Analisa Sulaica, and Amira VanLeeuwen.

The Destination ImagiNation program runs annually, and presents students working in teams of up to seven with the opportunity to choose from five mind-bending Team Challenges.  While each Team Challenge integrates a variety of chances to learn by doing, Challenges usually feature one prominent task, such as building a load-bearing structure, creating a vehicle, writing a performance piece or exploring history.  The program also provides Instant Challenges in which the teams work together to solve shorter Challenges within minutes.  Besides encouraging and teaching critical thinking and teamwork, these Instant Challenges promote the development of improvisational and quick-thinking skills.

This year’s DI  Team Challenges include:
• DIrect DIposit (engineering, cost/benefit analysis, technical design, communication, theater arts)
• DI-bot (structural engineering, robotics, research, technical design, science, theater arts)
• You’re Gonna Flip (storytelling, puppetry, visual arts, construction design, theater arts)
• Do or DI (improvisational acting, story development, research)
• Breaking DI News (structural engineering, materials science, international relations, research, innovation and design, mathematics, theater arts)
